It’s Wednesday..
..so it’s what I wore
Plain white long sleeved tee – Next, wide tan belt – Dorothy Perkins, blue floral skirt – upcycled from an old Joules dress, navy opaques – M&S, tan brogues – Office, charm bracelet – Merci Maman, watch – Michael Kors, manicure – Leading Lady by Leighton Denny
Now, what is that saying about necessity being the mother of invention? I was having an all too common I-have-nothing-to-wear calamity when I was suddenly hit by a brainwave. Why not chop up that old dress and turn it into a skirt? Desperate times people. Desperate times. This skirt used to be one of my favourite dresses from Joules. Losing weight meant that it no longer fitted me properly. It wasn’t just a case of it being too big, the top half just didn’t fit properly anymore. The shoulders slouched and the body of the dress just didn’t sit right. But because I loved the print on this dress so much, I’ve not been able to bring myself to get rid of it before now. So I thought what the heck, it’s got to be worth a try so I literally chopped the top half of the dress off with a pair of kitchen scissors then crudely handstitched the elasticated waistband back together. I should probably tell you not to try this at home but do you know what? It worked! And I now have a new skirt that fits me instead of a dress that I would never have worn again so, yeah! In all seriousness I would absolutely love to learn how to sew properly. I always envy people who can make or even adjust their own clothes properly it must be an amazingly useful skill to have. I had a sewing machine when I was a little girl and used to make clothes for my Sindy dolls (showing my age here!) but I wouldn’t know where to even start now.
I’ve worn my newly upcycled skirt with just a plain white tee today but looking at this I think it would look great with a breton tee too, what do you think? It’s not even nearly legs out weather here yet (yesterday we had rain, wind, sleet, hail, snow and sunshine all in one day!) so I’m wearing navy opaques and my trusty brogues. I’ll actually miss the old tights and brogue combo if and when the weather finally makes it mind up! The belt is from an old Dorothy Perkins dress but I think it looks smarter than the elasticated waist on show plus it comes together nicely with the tan brogues I hope.
So anyway, I don’t know what I am most impressed with, the fact that I dared to chop up an old favourite dress or that it actually worked and I now have an awesome new skirt! Ha! One thing is for sure though, I plan to do the exact same thing to a red version that I have of this Joules dress too. There’s no stopping me now, somebody hide those kitchen scissors..!
